Dear Constituent,
Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1831, which would permit the growing of industrial hemp. This bill is currently awaiting consideration before the House Committees on the Judiciary and Energy and Commerce. As a Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I look forward to reviewing all aspects of this legislation with my colleagues.
I appreciate the important role that agriculture plays in our economy. I am always interested in new farming ideas and technology that would increase Kentucky's agricultural production and profit. However, while hemp has been found to have certain agricultural and commercial benefits, there is some concern that its legalization could potentially jeopardize law enforcement's efforts to combat illegal drugs. I respect that you may view this differently, and I will continue to follow this issue closely with your thoughts in mind.
As our Nation continues to face great challenges, both at home and abroad, it is essential that Members of Congress hear from the people they have the great privilege of representing. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Sincerely,
Ed Whitfield
Member of Congress
