Dear Constituent,

Thank you for contacting me regarding changes to the regulation of industrial hemp. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with me.

H.R. 1831, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2011, was introduced on May 11, 2011, by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). This legislation would amend the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana because of its low tetrahydrocannabinol content. This would allow hemp cultivation within the U.S. for cloth-making, rope-making and other industries, and would allow states to determine whether hemp products meet the drug control standards enumerated in the bill.

I am sure you share the public's concern for protecting against the production, sale and use of illegal drugs, as many understand your concern to avoid restricting agricultural products unless they pose a legitimate drug threat. Be assured that I will be monitoring this issue and will keep your concerns in mind should I have the opportunity to vote on this bill in the House.
