Dear Constituent,

Thank you for taking the time to express your support for H.R. 1009, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007. I appreciate hearing your concerns, and welcome the opportunity to respond to your comments.

As you may know, our country has a long commercial history of the production of hemp, and Thomas Jefferson actually drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp parchment. Modern hemp production could provide significant environmental and economic benefits to our agricultural sector, but it is currently prohibited by the Controlled Substances Act.

H.R. 1009 would modify the code to specify that the term "marijuana" does not include industrial hemp, which would remove the federal prohibition on hemp farming. After reviewing the merits of this legislation, I have decided to cosponsor H.R. 1009.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact me about this important issue. Your comments help me to better represent the people of our Congressional District.

Sincerely,

Michael Honda
